Three Factors That Affect Exposure Output

Factor One, High Frequency vs. Single Phase Output:

HF doubles effective power. 35mA High Frequency equals the same effective power as 70mA with a single phase unit. High Frequency produces twice as much MR output compared to single phase, effectively doubling the mA. A 300mA single phase unit produces the same MR output as a 150mA High Frequency unit.

Factor Two, 30” vs. 40” FFD:

FED doubles effective power.  150mA at 40” FFD will produce the same effective power onto the film as 75mA will produce at a 30” FFD. The shorter the film focal distance (FFD) the greater the amount of MR entering the patient. A 30” FFD compared to a 40” FFD will produce twice the MR entering the patient.

Factor Three, 6:1 vs. 10:1 Grid Ratio:

Grid ratio doubles effective power.  150mA exposure with a 6:1 ratio grid produces the same effective power at the film as a 300mA exposure using a 10:1 ratio grid. The lower the grid ratio the less penetrating power or mA is required to operate the grid. A 6:1 ratio grid requires 1/2 the exposure to penetrate compared to a 10:1 ratio grid. Grid ratios are selected and determined by the maximum kVp used. A 100kVp unit can use a 6:1 ratio grid and a 125kVp unit uses a 8:1, or 10:1 ratio grid.

Versa-View™ HF Mobile 100kVp/35mA or 60mA System

Operating at a 30” FFD with a 6:1 ratio grid at 35mA or 60mA maximum, this unit produces approximately the same single phase MR output power when compared to using a Stationary Single Phase unit with a 10:1 ratio grid and 40” FFD. 10035 HF Unit 100kVp/35mA High Frequency unit requires 120vAc, 20 Amps of input power. The 10060HF Unit, 100kVp/60mA High frequency unit requires 220VAC, 20amp of input power.

Single Phase Stationary Radiographic Unit

Operating at a 40” FFD with a 10:1 ratio grid, this unit produces comparable MR at the film as a self contained mobile High Frequency system with a 6:1 ratio grid and 30” FFD.  A 300mA/125kVp stationary unit requires 208 VAC, 75 Amps input power.

Factors one, two, and three each will double the effective power of a portable, high frequency, self contained mobile x-ray system.  35mA x 2 =70mA, 70mA x 2 = 140mA, 140mA x 2 = 280mA of single phase output power.

Calculations are an estimate for comparative purposes.  Actual results may vary.
